Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 300 AM EST Wed Nov 23 2016 Valid 12Z Wed Nov 23 2016 - 12Z Fri Nov 25 2016 ...A winter mix of precipitation will be possible over portions of the Upper Mississippi Valley...Great Lakes...and Northeast... ...Periods of heavy rain and mountain snow should focus along the terrain of the Pacific Northwest... A winter mix of precipitation will continue to develop to the north of a weakening storm system lifting out of the central Plains on Wednesday...impacting portions of the Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes on Wednesday before snow and patches of freezing rain spread into the northeastern U.S. Wednesday night into Thursday. Snow and ice accumulations are expected to be relatively light with this weakening system...but could still make for hazardous road conditions during a busy Thanksgiving travel week. Farther south...showers and thunderstorms developing ahead of an associated cold front pressing eastward through the Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley on Wednesday should unfortunately diminish once the boundary reaches drought stricken areas of the Southeast on Thursday. Multiple Pacific systems moving inland over the Western U.S. will keep weather active from the Pacific Northeast and northern California to the northern/central Rockies during the next few days. Moist flow into the terrain should focus the highest precipitation totals along the favored slopes of the Pacific Northwest and cause periods of heavy rain and mountain snow. Also...snow will be possible over portions of the northern Plains as one of the Pacific systems ejects out of the Rockies on Thursday...but limited moisture and the quick progression should keep any snow accumulations light.
