Several significant storm systems will affect the western US over the next 3 days with heavy rain continuing for the coast from northern California into western Oregon and Washington. Rainfall amounts of 2 to greater than 4 inches are possible during this time frame. Heaviest snow is expected to fall across the Cascades and Olympic ranges with greater than a foot of snow in the higher peaks. Significant rain and snow are also expected across the mountains of northern California into the Sierra and modest rain and showers are are also forecast for southern California late Saturday into Sunday where conditions have been very dry. A strong front will sweep across the west on Sunday with snow developing across the high country from the Great Basin into the Rockies. An influx of Pacific moisture and dropping snow levels will produce some light snow accumulations in central and northern Nevada while heavier snow falls across the MOGOLLON Rim in Arizona, the Wasatch and in the Colorado Rockies, especially across the San Juan's, where more than a foot of snow is forecast. As the front continues eastward, low pressure is expected to develop just east of the Rockies and develop into a significant storm across the Plains states on Sunday into Monday. Rain, showers and a few thunderstorms will develop out ahead of the system across the Southern Plains, lower to Upper Mississippi Valley while rain may change to snow across the Northern Plains, where several inches is expected on Monday. Dry and fair weather will continue across the Southeast while a weak disorganized system moves across the Northeast with mostly scattered light rain and snow across northern portions but heavier precipitation is expected to develop across Maine on Saturday into Sunday, where the potential for heavier snow is expected across northern Maine on Saturday into Sunday with the potential for 4 to 8 inches of snow or more.
