Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 249 AM EST Sat Nov 26 2016 Valid 12Z Sat Nov 26 2016 - 12Z Mon Nov 28 2016 ...Rain and mountain snow to continue for the West... ...A significant storm will develop over the Plains on Sunday into Monday... ...Chilly, unsettled weather for the Northeast followed by clearing skies but some significant snow possible across northern Maine... Much of the West will be in a wet and active pattern over the next few days as several storm systems move through. Heavy rain will persist from along the coast from northern California into western Oregon and Washington; with amounts of 2 to 4+ inches possible. Snow will fall along the Olympics, Cascades and Sierras. The heaviest snow of 12+ inches is forecast for the Cascades and Olympic ranges at the highest elevations. Significant rain and snow are also expected across the mountains of northern California into the Sierra and modest amounts of rain and showers are are also forecast for southern California late this evening into Sunday where conditions have been very dry. A strong Pacific front push through the Interior West/Great Basin/Rockies spreading snow to the higher terrain. Snow levels will drop across the region, allowing light snow to accumulate over Nevada - increasing significantly from the Mongollon Rim in Arizona to the Wasatch and Central Rockies. Amounts in this region could exceed 1 foot by early next week. As the front continues eastward, low pressure is expected to develop just east of the Rockies and develop into a significant storm that will cross the Plains states on Sunday into Monday. Rain, showers and a few thunderstorms will develop out ahead of the system across the Southern Plains and the lower to Upper Mississippi Valley; while rain may change to snow across the Northern Plains, where several inches is expected on Monday. Precipitation is expected across the Northeast in association with a system tracking offshore. Rain and snow amounts will generally be on the lighter side; however, northern New England, especially across Maine, will have better potential for heavier snow amounts. 4 to 8 inches will be possible by the beginning of the week.
