Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 217 PM EST Sat Jan 28 2017 Valid 00Z Sun Jan 29 2017 - 00Z Tue Jan 31 2017 ...Heavy lake effect snow expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario... The eastern U.S. will remain under a broad upper-level trough through the short range forecast period, with a couple disturbances traversing the flow. Scattered snow showers are expected through Sunday for areas from the Great Lakes and Ohio valley to the Appalachians. Upslope westerly low-level flow could result in a few areas of enhanced snowfall amounts along the spine of the Appalachians. Farther north, lake effect snows are expected to continue downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. In these areas, periods of heavy lake effect snow and gusty winds will produce very difficult travel at times. Snow should begin to decrease in coverage across the Great Lakes and Appalachians Sunday night into Monday morning. Also on Monday, a frontal system associated with a fast-moving upper-level disturbance will bring another round of snow to the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes. Across the West, a strong area of arctic high pressure will remain in place, as it gradually weakens through the next couple days. Little in the way of precipitation is expected for most of the West through Monday. A weakening frontal boundary may bring scattered rain and mountain snow showers to portions of the Pacific Northwest on Sunday, with scattered snow showers possible across the northern Rockies by Monday. Temperatures are forecast to remain below average across portions of the eastern U.S. through the next couple days. High temperatures on Sunday are forecast to be 5 to 10 degrees below average across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, with these temperatures spreading to the East Coast by Monday. Meanwhile, a warming trend is expected across the central U.S. High temperatures are forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees above average by Monday across much of the plains.
