A clipper system coming across the Great Lakes on Tuesday and into the Northeast on Wednesday will bring snow to places from the Upper Midwest to New England the next few days. Accumulations in the 2 to 4 inch range is expected, except for some enhancement possible downwind of the Great Lakes and across portions of the central Appalachians where as much as 6 to 12 inches of snow may be possible. Return moisture from the Gulf of Mexico may also bring light rain showers with the passage of the cold front Wednesday across the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Tennessee Valley. Out west, onshore flow off the Pacific combined with an upper level system dropping into the Northwest will bring coastal Rain and mountain snow to parts of the West Coast, the northern Intermountain West, and the northern Rockies and High Plains. Heavy snowfall is expected across the northern Rockies, with as much as 1 to 2 feet likely in the highest terrain. Winter storm warnings, watches, and winter weather advisories are in effect. Precipitation will drop southward into California by Wednesday with rain expected along the coast and in the lower elevations, while snow falls over the Sierras.
