Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 247 PM EST Fri Feb 03 2017 Valid 00Z Sat Feb 04 2017 - 00Z Mon Feb 06 2017 ...Heavy snow possible for portions of the Sierra Nevadas, Absarokas, Bitterroots, Blue and Salmon River Ranges... ...Heavy rain possible for Northern California Coast... ...Lake effect snow downwind from the Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario... High pressure over much of the central and eastern states will quickly push a cold front southward into the Gulf of Mexico and across Florida this evening and into early Saturday. Lingering Gulf moisture will result in rain chances along the Gulf and Mid-Atlantic coast today, with drier air taking hold by the overnight hours. To the north, upper-level energy moving over the Great Lakes in combination will a weak stationary boundary at the surface will aid in producing lake effect snow, primarily downwind from the Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario through Saturday. Lake effect snow warnings and advisories are in effect for the favored areas in New York state. An upper-level low over the Eastern Pacific will slowly weaken and move onshore over the Pacific Northwest. A plume of moisture will stream into Central and Northern California and across much of the Northwest this weekend, resulting in mountain snow and rain along the coast and in the vallies. Coastal locations may have periods of heavy rain, while areas of higher terrain could see a wintry mix of snow, rain, and ice. The Sierra Nevadas and ranges from Idaho to northwest Wyoming will likely have heavy snow over the next few days. The secondary low will continue its track eastward, reaching the Upper Great Lakes by Sunday morning, where it will bring a good potential for snow across much of the Great Lakes region Saturday night through Sunday as well. Snow, possibly with a mix of freezing rain, is forecast for the central portion of the Applachians by early Sunday morning.
