Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 314 PM EST Sat Feb 25 2017 Valid 00Z Sun Feb 26 2017 - 00Z Tue Feb 28 2017 ...Storm system to affect portions of the Mid Atlantic Seaboard and New England this afternoon and tonight... ...Snow expected for the Great Lakes through Sunday... ...More precipitation, generally in the form of snow, expected for the Pacific Northwest and to finish out the weekend... A strong surface low pressure system will continue to lift northeast through eastern Canada this afternoon and overnight, with an associated cold front expected to sweep across the Mid Atlantic Seaboard and much of New England. This will result in showers and thunderstorms along the Atlantic coast through this evening, lingering into the overnight hours in New England. The storm prediction center has much of this area in slight risk for this afternoon, with storms having the potential to produce damaging winds and hail. Please refer to the storm prediction website for more information. In the wake of the cold front, most locations across the eastern half of the U.S. are seeing the return of more seasonable temperatures by February standards. Expect these cooler temperatures to remain in place for the next few days. A large high pressure ridge across much of the southeast will also keep conditions dry and mostly clear into Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, however, return flow behind the exiting high pressure, coupled with an incoming low pressure system, will advect enough moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to generate scattered showers and thunderstorms from eastern Texas to lower Mississippi Valley. Rain and storms will then spread from the Lower Mississippi Valley across much of the Southeast and Tennessee Valley Monday. Another low pressure system passing near the Upper Great Lakes will bring snow across the region tonight through Sunday. Finally, yet another low pressure system is poised to impact the Pacific Northwest late this weekend, continuing into the first part of the workweek as the low moves inland. This system will bring a wintry mix of rain and snow to much of the Pacific Northwest coast Sunday, transitioning to all snow inland and quickly spreading across the Intermountain West. Snow will then continue to spread eastward across the Rocky Mountains through at least Monday. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for many locations along the Pacific Northwest coast for potential snowfall impacts Sunday.
