Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 PM EDT Thu May 04 2017 Valid 00Z Fri May 05 2017 - 00Z Sun May 07 2017 ...Showers and thunderstorms to impact areas from the Southeast and Tennessee Valley to New England... ...Temperatures expected to be well above average for the western U.S... A low pressure system currently moving across the Southeast and Tennessee Valley will continue a northeasterly path towards the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Showers and thunderstorms will begin to spread across the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic overnight tonight--with the heaviest activity occurring along the Ohio Valley, coastal North Carolina and the central Appalachians overnight and into Friday morning. There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall for the Ohio Valley for tonight and tomorrow morning. The bulk of heavy precipitation will move into the Mid-Atlantic on Friday morning and will continue to spread throughout the Northeast during the day. By Saturday, the cold front will be well offshore; however, showers and thunderstorms will persist throughout New England as the surface low travels north along interior New England. The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting marginal risk of severe thunderstorms for the Southeast today and the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast on Friday. High pressure will carry on across the western U.S. during the short term period which will lead to dry and warm conditions. Temperatures will be 10-20 degrees above normal throughout the West and northern Plains. By Friday, a cold front will move across the Pacific Northwest--bringing with it rain and higher elevation snow. This will cool temperatures down for that region. However, much of the West will still experience well above average temperatures. The front will continue to push across the Intermountain West and with precipitation increasing as a result in this region. Once again, this will help alleviate the heat for areas west of the Rockies. The High Plains and northern Plains can expect dry and warm weather through Saturday.
