Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 357 PM EDT Sat May 06 2017 Valid 00Z Sun May 07 2017 - 00Z Tue May 09 2017 ...Low pressure systems across both the eastern and western U.S. through the weekend... ...Record breaking heat across the High Plains and northern Plains... It is a tale of two upper lows that will dominate the weather pattern through the weekend and into early next week. Starting in the eastern U.S.: a closed upper low will wobble across the Northeast which will lift a surface front northward from the Northeast to New England. This will bring heavy rain especially across Maine--which could lead to excessive rainfall through tonight. On Sunday and Monday, light showers and even some snow in the higher elevations of upstate New York and interior New England are possible. Temperatures will be below average as northeasterly flow will bring cooler conditions across the East Coast. A deep upper low will dig across the western U.S. late tonight and into tomorrow. This will drive a strong Pacific cold front across the Pacific Northwest into the Rockies. In addition, an upper low will close off the California coast this evening and will strength as it moves toward the southwestern U.S. Both of these systems will bring precipitation across the Rockies, Great Basin and Desert Southwest through the short term period. The Pacific Northwest will quickly dry out by Sunday; meanwhile, areas across the Great Basin and Desert Southwest will experience light to moderate showers throughout Sunday and into Monday. In between these two upper lows, an upper ridge is bringing very warm air across the Plains. Record breaking temperatures especially across eastern Montana and throughout the northern Plains is expected today and Sunday afternoon. The incoming Pacific cold front will bring relief to these areas by Monday. Reinhart Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
