Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 PM EDT Wed May 24 2017 Valid 00Z Thu May 25 2017 - 00Z Sat May 27 2017 ...Thunderstorms expected across the Southeast and Carolinas... ...Cooler temperatures will continue to prevail the eastern U.S. with warmer weather across the West and Plains... An upper low continues to dig across the Southeast while a strong cold front will move across the Southeast, Florida, and the Carolinas. Copious amounts of moisture will stream across northern Florida and southern Georgia while the cold front will act as a focal point to set off convection. Consequently, heavy rain will impact these regions as the cold front pushes south and east. By early Thursday morning, heavy rainfall will shift toward central Florida ahead of the cold front and slowly moves toward South Florida. As the front stalls on Friday morning in South Florida, showers and thunderstorms will linger in this region and the Florida Keys. The primary low for the aforementioned cold front will progress northeast in the Ohio Valley and will approach the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by tonight. Precipitation will increase in these areas by late tonight and continue for Thursday. Another low will form in Delmarva on Thursday morning and take over while sliding along the New England coast. This will cause heavy rainfall throughout Thursday and Friday throughout the New England area; expect the heavier rainfall to taper off beginning Friday night. Overall, flash flooding will be a concern along the central and southern Appalachians as orographics will enhance precipitation across these mountains. Another upper level low will move across the Intermountain West and toward the Plains tonight and into Thursday. A surface front will move across the Intermountain West; however, moisture will be limited so not much precipitation is expected. Once the front moves into the Plains, showers will move along and ahead of the boundary. Precipitation will begin to increase along the central Plains and into the central Rockies on Thursday and will linger across the West as the front stalls from the Central Basin to the Front Range of Colorado. The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall along northwest Kansas into the beginning of the weekend. Cooler temperatures will continue across the East Coast with warmer temperatures in the western U.S. By Thursday, cooler temperatures are expected in the Intermoutain West/Central Basin as precipitation increases in this area and warmer temperatures will shift to the southern Plains.
