Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 154 PM EDT Wed May 31 2017 Valid 00Z Thu Jun 01 2017 - 00Z Sat Jun 03 2017 ...Severe thunderstorms possible for portions of the Northeast and the central plains today... ...Above average temperatures expected for the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies... Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this afternoon and evening as a cold front advances through the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast. Some of the storms will have the potential to be severe across the Northeast -- please refer to SPC for additional details on the severe weather threat. Drier and somewhat cooler air will filter into the East once the front pushes offshore by Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms, possibly a few severe, will fire up along trailing end of this cold front across the Central Plains/Mid-Mississippi Valley this afternoon through late tonight. Farther south, the remnants of a stationary boundary is still providing a focus for scattered areas of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Locally heavy rain will be possible for parts of West Texas and the Hill Country, which may increase the threat for flash flooding. The upper-level ridge will continue to migrate from the West Coast toward the Intermountain West/High Plains; which will shifts the areas of above average temperatures for the latter half of the week. Much of the Great Basin and Northern Rockies observed warmer than usual temperatures today, averaging 10 to 20 degrees above average. This warmer airmass will spread to the High Plains by Thursday. The Pacific Northwest will cool down as an upper-level trough moves in and a Pacific front pushes inland late tonight and into Thursday. This system will usher in slightly below seasonal average temperatures to the Pacific Northwest, as well as, the potential for a few areas of showers and thunderstorms.
