A low pressure system passing through the Great Basin/Rockies today will move eastward through the Northern/Central Plains and Upper Midwest through midweek. Anomalous Gulf Moisture feeding northward ahead of the advancing front will help initiate strong convection from the High Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorms are likely to develop near the Wyoming/South Dakota/Nebraska border today. The threat area will shift to the eastern Dakotas/Upper Midwest region on Tuesday as the front progresses across the northern-tier states. Any of these storms will have the potential to produce heavy rainfall, that could lead to flash flooding. In addition, showers and thunderstorms will develop over parts of northern Maine today...spanning from the New England Coast westward to the Lower Great Lakes by Tuesday as a cold front moves south and eastward through the Northeast. A combination of warm Gulf moisture advecting northward and upper-level impulses will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Western Gulf Coast eastward to the Southeast. The showers and thunderstorms will have the greatest areal coverage during the late afternoon into the late evening hours through Tuesday. For the West, rain with some embedded thunderstorms will spread from parts of the Pacific Northwest/Northern California into parts of the Northern/Central Rockies and the Great Basin as an upper-level low tracks from the Great Basin into the Northern Plains. Some of the higher elevations of the Sierras and into the Great Basin, as well as, northern Idaho and southwest Montana will have snow this evening and into Tuesday.
