A cold front pushing across the central and eastern U.S. over the next few days will bring chances for severe weather and flash flooding. A warm and humid air mass in place across the eastern U.S. will interact with the cold front to produce thunderstorms from the Central Plains to the Northeast today. With plenty of available moisture, these storm could produce locally heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding. To go along with the flash flood threat, the upper level pattern will support strong to severe thunderstorms for much of the same region. The western U.S. will experience a period of above normal temperatures with portions of the Southwest and California testing record high temperatures. A strong ridge of high pressure will take hold in the upper atmosphere across the Southwest U.S. allowing for surface temperatures to soar well into the triple digits for the central valley of California and much of the desert Southwest. High temperatures could reach into the 110s for these areas with a few spots pushing 120.The heat will be dangerous and a large portion of the region is under heat advisories and excessive heat warnings.
