Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 PM EDT Fri Jun 30 2017 Valid 00Z Sat Jul 01 2017 - 00Z Mon Jul 03 2017 ...Strong to severe thunderstorms for the Southern Plains where flash flooding is possible through Saturday morning... ...Thunderstorms will generally shift eastward into the eastern U.S. for the next couple of days... The central and eastern U.S. will see unsettled weather through the weekend due to a broad upper-level trough and several frontal systems associated with it. A portion of the main frontal system is expected to stall around the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley. This will help lead to heavy rain falling over the same areas, so flash flooding is a possibility through Saturday morning, along with strong to severe thunderstorms in those areas. Farther northeast, this frontal system is also expected to cause potentially severe storms and locally heavy rain for portions of the Ohio Valley, the Lower Great Lakes, and the Northeast through Saturday morning. On Saturday and Saturday night, the cold front will shift eastward, leading to possibly severe thunderstorms that could contain flash flooding from the northern Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. Please refer to the Storm Prediction Center for further information on the severe weather threat. Elsewhere, scattered thunderstorms are expected for the southeastern U.S., with typical summer heat and humidity present. Thunderstorms are also possible for the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes on Sunday as another front makes its way through that area. Behind this front, temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than average. Meanwhile, much of the western U.S. is expecting warm temperatures. The Intermountain West and the Northern Rockies will see high temperatures around 10 degrees above average. Conditions will be mostly dry, though some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible for the Intermountain West, particularly on Saturday afternoon.
