Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 343 AM EDT Fri Jul 07 2017 Valid 12Z Fri Jul 07 2017 - 12Z Sun Jul 09 2017 ...Flash flooding possible for portions of the Ohio valley/Central Appalachians and northern and far southern New England... ...Severe thunderstorms possible for the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley region... ...Above average temperatures expected for much of the western U.S... Showers and thunderstorms continued to develop along and ahead of an advancing cold front from the Great Lakes region to the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast during the overnight hours. The front is expected to pass through the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley the afternoon, which will shift the area of showers and thunderstorms to the Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and northward. Some of these storms will potentially be strong to severe and may produce periods of heavy rain fall. The Storm Prediction Center was highlighted an area spanning from Indiana to the western half of Pennsylvania as having a slight risk for severe storms. Please refer to the SPC Convective Outlooks for additional information. WPC has issued a marginal risk for excessive rainfall for portions of the Central Appalachians and far northern New England. A slight risk covers is in effect from Long Island to Cape Cod today where 1 to 2 inches may be possible. As this front continues its forward progress, it will keep scattered storms a possibility from the southern plains to the Southeast through Saturday. Hot and mostly dry conditions will prevail across the West as an upper-level ridge remains anchored across the Four Corners region through the weekend. Much of the Desert Southwest has excessive heat warnings in effect with highs expected in the 110 to 120 range. Red flag warnings remain in place across portions of the Great Basin and interior Washington and Oregon. Some locations in the interior Northwest and the northern Rockies are forecast to rise well into the 90s to near 100, which is 10 to 20 degrees above average. The heat will expand eastward into the northern High Plains this weekend. Numerous daily temperature records may be tied or broken.
