Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 353 PM EDT Sun Jul 30 2017 Valid 00Z Mon Jul 31 2017 - 00Z Wed Aug 02 2017 ...A threat for flash flooding exists across the Southern High Plains... ...A slow-moving cold front will keep conditions wet across the state of Florida... ...Increasing warmth likely along the West Coast into next week.. Much of Florida will be stuck in a wet pattern as a cold front slowly moves south stalls over the Gulf of Mexico. Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast for this region. With the potential to dump 2 to 4 inches, flash flooding may result from the higher rainfall amounts...especially for portions of the western coast and central Florida. The elevated risk will persist through at least Wednesday. Abundant tropical moisture will continue to stream into the Four Corners region over the next few days. Multiple mid-level disturbances will interact with this moist airmass to trigger showers and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rainfall is likely along the east facing slopes of the Southern/Central Rockies given sufficient upslope flow against the terrain. Storm movement is forecast to be relatively slow, which will increase the risk for ponding, rapid runoff or flash flooding across the Southern High Plains. Forecast amounts of 1 to 3 inches cover much of the New Mexico/Texas border. A large portion of Southeast Colorado, Northeast New Mexico and the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma have a flash flood watch in effect. Much of the West Coast will have warmer than average temperatures over the next few days as an upper-level ridge strengthens. Several locations are forecast to have afternoon highs climbing into the 100 and 110 degrees-especially for the interior central valleys of California and into the Desert Southwest. Some monsoonal moisture squeaking into the latter region could increase cloud cover and thunderstorm chances which would limit the heat a bit. Heat advisories are in effect for portions of the Sierra Nevadas and western Nevada. Excessive heat watches and warnings are in effect from northern California to southwest Washington.
