Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 344 AM EDT Tue Aug 08 2017 Valid 12Z Tue Aug 08 2017 - 12Z Thu Aug 10 2017 ...Heavy rainfall to continue across the Mid-Atlantic through Tuesday morning... ...Showers and thunderstorms expected throughout the Southeast and southern Plains... ...Precipitation to develop along the front from the Great Lakes to the northern Plains... Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop along a strong front, spanning from the Mid-Atlantic to the Southern High Plains over the next few days. The surface low and leading edge of this system will continue to push further offshore into the Atlantic today allowing linger showers and cloud cover to decrease across the Central/Northern Appalachians and northern Mid-Atlantic. Warm, moist air streaming northward from the Gulf of Mexico will interact with this boundary triggering convection. The trailing edge of this front will becoming quasi-stationary over the Lower Mississippi valley, which will allow storm motion to be relatively slow and for multiple storms to pass over the same area. Some of these storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours. This will increase the risk for flooding along the front, especially for the lower Mississippi valley and the coastal Carolinas through Thursday. A cold front forecast to drop through the Northern Plains and Great Lakes region by Wednesday will generate showers and thunderstorms for the Central/Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes regions. The highest rainfall with this system will likely focus over northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan where amounts nearing 2 inches will be possible. Much of the West will be mostly dry through midweek. A few favored areas of higher terrain across the Great Basin and Intermountain West will have light amounts of precipitation.
