Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 PM EDT Fri Aug 11 2017 Valid 00Z Sat Aug 12 2017 - 00Z Mon Aug 14 2017 ...Heavy rain and severe weather are expected over Oklahoma and northern Texas this weekend... ...Areas of heavy rain and strong to severe storms will be possible across portions of the Central and Northern Plains... ...Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected ahead of a cold front approaching the eastern third of the Nation Friday into Saturday... ...An upcoming pattern change in the northwestern U.S. will lower temperatures and raise the chance for precipitation... Rain and thunderstorms will focus along a frontal boundary expected to linger over the Southern Plains this weekend. The combination of anomalous moisture along the stalled boundary and impulses of energy aloft could lead to organized areas of heavy rainfall and severe weather, with locations over Oklahoma and northern Texas expected to see the greatest threat for flash flooding and severe storms. Areas of heavy rain and severe weather will also be possible farther north across portions of the Central and Northern Plains as moisture and instability increase ahead of a shortwave and associated surface low dropping southeastward through the north central U.S. this weekend. An abundance of moisture surging northward ahead of a cold front approaching the eastern third of the Nation will fuel widespread convection across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic states, and Northeast Friday evening into Saturday. Although activity should be mainly scattered in nature, areas of locally heavy rainfall will be possible. The chance for precipitation should decrease across New England on Sunday as the northern portion of the boundary pushes offshore, but an additional day of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
