Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 340 AM EDT Sat Aug 26 2017 Valid 12Z Sat Aug 26 2017 - 12Z Mon Aug 28 2017 ...Hurricane Harvey will produce catastrophic and life-threatening rainfall and flooding across the middle and upper Texas coast this weekend and into next week... ...Heavy rainfall possible across portions of Florida and the Southeast coast this weekend... ...Slight risk for severe weather on Saturday across parts of the upper Midwest and High Plains... Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the middle Texas coast overnight and will continue to linger over this region all weekend and into next week, bringing high winds and extreme rainfall to portions of southern and southeast Texas. The latest WPC three day cumulative rainfall forecast (valid through Monday) shows upwards of 20 to 25 inches of rain is possible, with even more rain expected past the short range period as well. Rainfall of this magnitude will result in catastrophic and life-threatening flooding and flash flooding. In addition to flooding, there will remain a threat for severe weather as well, and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted parts of the Texas coast in a slight risk through the weekend. For the latest information regarding Harvey, please refer to the products issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Meanwhile, an area of low pressure lingering over the Florida peninsula will move slowly northeastward just off the Southeast coast by Sunday night. NHC is monitoring this low for possible development, but regardless of development, heavy rainfall is possible this weekend across central and southern Florida and the Southeast coast. Monitor the NHC web page for more information on this system. To the north of the active tropics, expect showers and thunderstorms ahead of a cold front dropping southward this weekend from the northern Plains to the middle Mississippi Valley. Some storms may produce locally heavy rainfall and severe weather and SPC has highlighted parts of the upper Midwest and the High Plains in a slight risk for Saturday. Elsewhere, strong upper ridging across the Western U.S. will keep conditions warm and mostly dry the next few days, with afternoon high temperatures as much as 5 to 10, maybe 15, degrees above normal.
