Hurricane Irma will travel northward along the Gulf Coast of Florida through the rest of today and early Monday morning. It will approach the Florida Panhandle during the day on Monday as it continues to weaken. This storm is producing life-threatening storm surge and destructive winds and will continue to do so over the next day. In addition to this, a high risk of flash flooding will also accompany Irma across the majority of Florida and a risk for severe weather. By late Monday and into Tuesday, the threat of flash flooding will shift north across the Southeast and parts of the Tennessee Valley. There is also a risk of severe weather along the Georgia/South Carolina coast. For the most current information regarding Irma, please see the National Hurricane Center (www.hurricanes.gov). An upper level low off the California coast will drift northward on Monday and into Tuesday. This low will bring moisture across the southwestern U.S. and will give way to scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Southwest, Great Basin, southern California, and along the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Most of this activity will occur in the later afternoon/evening hours throughout the short term period. Temperatures across the eastern U.S. will continue to be below normal for this time of year--ushering in fall-like conditions. However, warmer than normal temperatures will continue across the West and northern/central Plains through Tuesday. Reinhart Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
