Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 323 PM EDT Tue Oct 03 2017 Valid 00Z Wed Oct 04 2017 - 00Z Fri Oct 06 2017 ...Heavy rain possible across the central U.S... ...Snow expected in the northern Rockies and parts of the central Rockies... ...Showers and thunderstorms will continue along southeast Florida and parts of the Gulf Coast... As a strong cold front stretches across the Great Lakes to the southern Plains, showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop and move along that boundary. The southern portion of the front will slow, resulting in heavy rainfall throughout the southern Plains and into the middle Mississippi Valley into Wednesday morning. As the northern half of the front quickly moves into New England on Wednesday, showers will move from the lower Great Lakes and into New England during the day. However, the southern half of the front will lift northward as a warm front, which will make the heavy rainfall persist in the southern Plains. As another front ejects into the central Plains on Thursday, it will bring another round of heavy rainfall from the central Plains to the middle Mississippi Valley. As an upper level low in the western U.S. closes off and drifts northward from the central Great Basin to the northern Rockies, it will bring light showers and higher elevation snow to northeastern Nevada on Wednesday. By Wednesday night and into Thursday, the precipitation will move northward across the northern Rockies as the pinched off low drifts north--giving way to light higher elevation snowfall there. This very light precipitation in the northern Rockies will continue throughout Thursday. A very active period is expected for Florida over the short term period. Easterly flow will bring copious amounts of tropical moisture--and combining that with instability--this will give way to widespread showers and thunderstorms through Thursday. The afternoon/evening will have the most thunderstorm coverage across southeastern/central Florida. In addition, subtropical moisture on tap in Deep South Texas will also yield showers and thunderstorms every afternoon through the short term period.
