Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 AM EDT Wed Oct 04 2017 Valid 12Z Wed Oct 04 2017 - 12Z Fri Oct 06 2017 ...Heavy rain possible across the central U.S... ...Snow expected in the northern Rockies and parts of the central Rockies... ...Showers and thunderstorms will continue along southeast Florida and parts of the Gulf Coast... A low pressure system is forecast to exit the Rockies and enter the Central U.S. by early Thursday morning. With surface high pressure building over the Northern High Plains and persisting over the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic region, the leading edge of the cold front will quickly pass through the Great Lakes and Northeast. The trailing edge of the frontal boundary over the Central/Southern Plains will be slow moving. Showers and thunderstorms developing along the front will produce heavier rainfall at times, which may increase the risk for flash flooding from the Southern Plains to the Middle Mississippi Valley today. As the front lifts as a warm front into the Central Plains and Midwest the area of increased risk of excessive rainfall shifts northward as well on Thursday. Light showers and higher elevation snow is forecast for portions of northeast Nevada today-- expanding to the Northern Rockies by late tonight as an upper-level low drifts northward over the Intermountain West. Snow accumulations are expected to be a couple inches or less for this region. Widespread to numerous showers and thunderstorms will hang Florida over the next few days. Easterly flow will bring copious amounts of tropical moisture--and combining that with instability--this will give way to widespread showers and thunderstorms through Thursday. Areal coverage of the thunderstorms will increase during the afternoon and evening hours. In addition, subtropical moisture on tap in Deep South Texas will also yield showers and thunderstorms every afternoon through the short term period.
