Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 257 PM EST Mon Dec 11 2017 Valid 00Z Tue Dec 12 2017 - 00Z Thu Dec 14 2017 ...Critical fire weather conditions persisting across southern California and also present for the central Plains.... ...Locally heavy lake effect snowfall to continue downwind of the Great Lakes through Wednesday morning... ...Coastal storm to bring snowy conditions to portions of the Northeast on Tuesday... Another surge of cold air and round of light snow is expected across the great lakes region through Tuesday as a clipper system moves through. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Michigan, southeast Wisconsin, northern Indiana and north-central Ohio. Temperatures on Tuesday will average 10 to 15 degrees colder than usual for Wisconsin and Michigan. Areas downwind of Lakes Superior and Michigan will have enhanced snowfall once the surface winds turn northwesterly... a Lake Effect Snow Warning is also in effect for counties downwind of Lake Erie. As the storm system tracks toward the Northeast on Tuesday, light to moderate snow will overspread upstate New York into interior New England by early afternoon. As Tuesday progresses, the low will deepen as it lifts through the Northeast. At this time, the greater snow accumulations are a forecast for the higher terrain. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Upstate New York, Vermont and Massachusetts... while a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for New Hampshire and Maine. For the West, warm and dry conditions will continue as High pressure remains anchored over the region. Above normal temperatures are forecast for a vast majority of the West, Southwest and Central Plains. The warm and dry conditions have increased the risk for the spread of wildfires. Strong, gusty Santa Ana winds will continue in Southern California and while wind gusts are expected to weaken by mid-week, elevated fire weather concerns will linger across Southern California for another couple of days.
