The Great Lakes region and the Northeast will continue to be cold and snowy through midweek as upper-level energy tracks through. West-Northwesterly winds will set up over the open waters as a slow moving cold front passes through the region; which, will result in lake enhanced snowfall to the favored areas downwind. Heavy snow is forecast for most of northern New England where amounts may close in on a foot. Travel across this sector of the country will likely be hazardous. Please refer to WPC's winter weather discussion for additional details (QPFHSD). Weakening upper-level energy over the Pacific Northwest will migrate continue eastward to parts of the Middle Mississippi Valley by Tuesday. The system will produce coastal rain and higher elevation snow over parts of the Pacific Northwest with snow streaming into part of the Northern Intermountain Region/Great Basin through late Christmas evening. Additionally, pockets of rain/freezing rain will develop over parts of the Pacific Northwest ending overnight Monday along with the rest of the precipitation. The snow will expand from portions of the Northern/Central Rockies eastward into the Central/Northern High Plains tonight into Tuesday.
