Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 256 PM EST Sun Jan 14 2018 Valid 00Z Mon Jan 15 2018 - 00Z Wed Jan 17 2018 ...Another round of significant cold to impact the Plains and Midwest early this week... ...Wintry mix expected into portions of central and southern Texas Monday night and Tuesday... A cold front will push through the central U.S. ushering widespread snow from the Midwest/Upper Midwest to the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys,Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast as it tracks to the east. Snowfall accumulations are expected to remain light with locally higher totals in the upslope regions of the Northern and Central High Plains through Monday. Strong Canadian high pressure sliding southeast into the Northern and Central Plains in the wake of the front, blasting the region with cold air. A few daily temperature records may be broken over the next couple of days. Temperatures across the Central and Northern Plains are forecast to stay below zero for much of the Dakotas into Minnesota and sub-freezing highs will reach as far south as the northern Texas panhandle into northern Oklahoma. These numbers will be roughly 15 to 30 degrees below mid-January averages. This influx of cold air will result in snow and a wintry mix for locations down south who do not typically see wintry precipitation- especially for portions of central and southern Texas and Louisiana. The warm and mostly conditions will prevail in the West early in the week prior to a Pacific cold front advancing toward the coast. Run will move into central California, Oregon and Washington by early Tuesday morning. This first round of rainfall is expected to be beneficial given below average precipitation over the past few weeks for the region, but heavier rainfall will be possible for the Northwest and central/northern California by late in the week.
