Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 224 AM EST Tue Jan 16 2018 Valid 12Z Tue Jan 16 2018 - 12Z Thu Jan 18 2018 ...Wintry mix for the central/southern Texas into Louisiana and the central Gulf Coast today... ...Bitter cold temperatures to sweep south and east to the Gulf Coast and Southeastern U.S... ...Locally heavy snow possible over parts of the Northeast Tuesday night into Wednesday... Bitter cold temperatures filtering in behind a cold front will continue to allow a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to impact portions of south-central into southeastern Texas and Louisiana today. A light wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is also expected tonight along the central Gulf Coast. While additional snowfall totals are expected to be light, up to an inch perhaps, sleet and freezing rain will likely impact travel from the Rio Grande to San Antonio, Corpus Christi and eastward into southern Louisiana and along the remainder of the central Gulf Coast. For temperatures, the greatest departures from normal will be in place from portions of the lower Missouri valley into the Ozarks where highs may not break single digit readings today. Highs are only expected to near the freezing mark for parts of central Texas with these temperatures translating into 20 to 30+ degrees below mid-January averages from Texas into the nation's heartland. Light snow and colder temperatures will spread eastward for Wednesday with accumulations from Tennessee/Kentucky into the central Appalachians, northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Coastal redevelopment of a storm system off of the New England coast on Wednesday is expected to aid in producing moderate snow totals for portions of southern New York into central New England, some of which could be locally. Warming temperatures are expected in the northern Plains by Wednesday where highs are forecast to reach the 30s and 40s given a change in the upper level flow and the infiltration of warmer temperatures from the west. A weakening cold front will bring light rain to northern California and the Pacific Northwest today, followed by a brief break tonight followed by another round of rain starting on Wednesday. More substantial rainfall is expected with the second round of precipitation starting Wednesday which will bring an end to the relatively dry weather seen over the past two weeks.
