Surface high pressure will migrate from the central to eastern states this weekend bringing with it mostly warmer and drier conditions. Temperatures will generally be near, or warmer than average, for mid-January for much of the central and eastern states. Across the West, unsettled weather and colder temperatures will return. A cold front will pass through the Intermountain West- with the leading edge sweeping through the Northern Plains today while the central and southern flank slowly moves through the Great Basin and Central Rockies this weekend. Widespread snow will accompany, especially to the higher elevations of California, the Great Basin and the Northern/Central Rockies. In addition to colder temperatures, another frontal system is forecast to approach the coast, bringing additional wet weather to the region on Saturday and Sunday.
