Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 259 AM EST Fri Feb 16 2018 Valid 12Z Fri Feb 16 2018 - 12Z Sun Feb 18 2018 ...Heavy rainfall could bring flooding to parts of the Ohio Valley and Northeast... ...Warm temperatures expected across the eastern U.S. before a strong cold front sweeps eastward... ...Active weather expected for the Pacific West and northern Rockies... Rather warm temperatures are in store for the eastern U.S. as warm, moist air lifts northward. Several locations are forecast to have afternoon highs nearing 30 degrees above normal for mid-February. This moisture will interact with a cold front sweeping through the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and Mid-Atlantic and will generate showers and thunderstorms along the boundary. Precipitation will span from the Southern Plains to the northern Mid-Atlantic, with the highest amounts likely concentrating over the eastern Ohio Valley/Northern Appalachians. This region will have an increased risk for flooding this weekend; therefore a slight risk of excessive rainfall has been issued. As the front pushes south, coverage of lighter rainfall will increase across the Southeast and the Carolinas. The airmass across the central U.S. will cool to slightly below average in the wake of the frontal passage. Much of the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West will be in an active wet pattern as multiple upper level disturbances pass through. Showers and higher elevation snow will increase through the day today as a Pacific front pushes inland. This precipitation will continue into the weekend as multiple systems move across these regions. Heavy snow is expected along the Washington Cascades where there are winter weather advisories in effect mostly on Friday. Campbell Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
