Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 PM EDT Fri Mar 30 2018 Valid 00Z Sat Mar 31 2018 - 00Z Mon Apr 02 2018 ..Heavy snow possible across parts of the Dakotas and the Upper Midwest... ...Colder conditions return to the East Coast this weekend... ...Another round of rain possible for parts of the central U.S. where flooding is ongoing... Showers and thunderstorms, spanning from the Northeast to Florida, are tracking east this afternoon as a cold front sweeps through. Additional precipitation is expected as another cold front approaches from Canada this weekend, reinforcing cold air for the East Coast. An upper level disturbance will slide over the northern Rockies late tonight--bringing higher elevation snow across the northern Rockies and light showers as the Arctic boundary plunges south. Snow showers across Montana and the Dakota will become more widespread and shift toward the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region by the end of the weekend as a cold front pushes further into the Plains and the surface low lifts into southeast Canada. Snow will be heavy at times across the northern-tier states. The showers are expected to move from the upper/middle Mississippi Valley on Saturday morning and reach the Tennessee Valley and lower Mississippi Valley by Sunday morning. Light snow showers are also expected along the interior of New England into the central Appalachians on Sunday morning. Numerous Winter Weather Advisories/Winter Storm Warnings and a handful of Blizzard Warnings are in effect from northeast Montana to Upper Michigan. Further south along the same cold front, rain is expected to develop portions of the Plains, Midwest, Mid/Lower Mississippi Valley and Tennessee/Ohio Valleys. This region is water logged from longer duration of rain and has ongoing river flooding. Any additional moisture may lead to increase flooding risk and/or immediate recovery efforts.
