Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 PM EDT Fri Apr 13 2018 Valid 00Z Sat Apr 14 2018 - 00Z Mon Apr 16 2018 ...Major storm system to bring heavy snow, flash flooding and severe weather hazards across the central and eastern U.S... A very impressive storm system is underway as snow spreads across the Plains and thunderstorms develop across Texas and Oklahoma. A surface low will continue to deepen as it moves eastward across the central Plains this afternoon and into the Mississippi Valley tonight. With cold air in place, moisture will wrap around the surface low and produce heavy snowfall across the northern and central Plains in addition to the Upper Midwest through tomorrow. Over a foot of snow is expected especially from northeastern Nebraska through southwest Minnesota. High winds are also expected which will cause blizzard conditions from the High Plains of Colorado, northern Kansas and northward into South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. By Sunday morning, the surface low will be centered across the Ohio Valley and shift the snowfall into the Great Lakes. Winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings are in effect for portions of the northern and central Plains in addition to the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes regions. As the central portion of the country receives late season winter snow, severe weather and flash flooding will also be impacting the southern states. Thunderstorms have already begun to fire off along a dryline in Oklahoma and Texas. The convection is expected to progress into the lower Mississippi Valley tonight and into Saturday morning. These storms, which are already producing severe weather, will continue the potential of severe weather especially in the middle and lower Mississippi Valley--where the Storm Prediction Center has issued an enhanced risk. A moderate risk of severe thunderstorms has been placed from central Arkansas to the Arklatex region. This activity will also have the potential to produce flash flooding--and a moderate risk of excessive rainfall for parts of the lower Mississippi Valley has been issued. Both threats of severe weather and flash flooding will continue across the Southeast on Saturday as this line of thunderstorms continues along the strong cold front.
