Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 AM EDT Thu Apr 19 2018 Valid 12Z Thu Apr 19 2018 - 12Z Sat Apr 21 2018 ...Late season snowfall accumulations expected from the Middle Mississippi Valley into the Lower Great Lakes and interior New England... ...Dry and windy conditions will significantly increase the threat for wildfire production over the Four Corners into the High Plains... The low pressure system that brought late season snow to a large portion of the Upper Mississippi Valley on Wednesday will cross the Appalachians and track offshore today and through the end the week. Some lighter snow may linger across the lower Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and interior Northeast. Surface high pressure will settle in across much of the central U.S., keeping temperatures on the cooler side for mid-April with readings as much as 10 to 20 degrees below normal. Another round of snow can be expected for portions of the Central and Southern Rockies as a strong Pacific system moves through the Desert Southwest- focusing the highest snow totals of 6 to 10 inches in the highest peaks. Thunderstorms may develop along and ahead of the surface front once is approaches the Plains; however, this will trigger dry, gusty wind to race across the Southern Plains. This will keep the critical to extreme risk for fire weather across this region. Rain and some elevated snow will return to portions of the Pacific Northwest by the weekend as a system approaches from the Gulf.
