Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 PM EDT Mon May 21 2018 Valid 00Z Tue May 22 2018 - 00Z Thu May 24 2018 ...Locally heavy rainfall and strong to severe weather expected this evening across parts of the Ohio Valley as well as the southern High Plains... ...Unsettled weather will continue into the middle of the week for much of the Deep South into the Mid-Atlantic and the intermountain West... Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop across much of the Deep South to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic the as anomalous moisture interacts with multiple impulses of upper level energy. Much of the activity should be fairly scattered in nature, with the exception of portions of the Ohio Valley and the northern Mid-Atlantic where moderate to locally heavy rainfall and possible strong to severe thunderstorms are expected near a surface low and warm front lifting through the region. The storm prediction center has highlighted much of this area in a marginal to slight risk for severe weather. Expect the scattered showers and storms to continue through the next couple of days as cold front also moves slowly south and eastward through the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and the Mid-Atlantic. Broad mid-upper level troughing will keep unsettled weather in the forecast across much of the Western U.S.. Activity should be mostly diurnal and scattered, but moisture surging northward ahead of a weakening closed low over the Southwest this afternoon may help to focus organized rainfall and strong to severe storms across portions of the southern High Plains. Both WPC and SPC have this region under a slight risk for excessive rainfall and severe weather, respectively. Temperature wise across the country, near to below normal afternoon highs can be expected underneath the upper low over the Southwest, as well as across the Ohio Valley, lower Great Lakes, and the northeast by Tuesday and Wednesday as the cold front scoots through. Across the Northwest, and the Great Plains, above normal temperatures are expected underneath a couple of building ridges aloft.
