Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 401 AM EDT Wed Sep 05 2018 Valid 12Z Wed Sep 05 2018 - 12Z Fri Sep 07 2018 ...Tropical Storm Gordon has made landfall and will continue to track inland bringing heavy rain threats and flash flooding to the Lower Mississippi Valley... ...Excessive rainfall and flash flooding likely across the Central Plains, Middle and Upper Mississippi Valleys, and into the Upper Great Lakes... ...Excessive heat will be felt across the northeastern U.S.... Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall late Tuesday evening near the Alabama and Mississippi border and is forecast to weaken as it hooks north-northeast through Arkansas, Missouri and through the Upper Midwest/ Great Lakes region by the end of the week. A swath of 2 to 5 inches, with localized higher amounts, is forecast from Mississippi to Illinois in a boomerang pattern. A vast area will have elevated flooding concerns over the next few days. WPC has portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley and Midwest in a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall. Multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms will persist across parts of the Central Plains and Mid/Upper Mississippi Valley, which will maintain and elevated threat for continued flooding. A strong frontal system will push through the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley today and provide a focus for heavy rain across the Mid and Upper Mississippi Valley and into the Upper Great Lakes region. Numerous areas within this region are already experiencing saturated soils and ongoing flooding, so any further rainfall will only further exacerbate the situation. Large areas of the Central Plains, Middle and Upper Mississippi Valley and the Upper Great Lakes are currently under Flash Flood Watches and Warnings. Expect these threats to move slightly southward and eastward with the frontal system over the coming days. Ahead of this approaching cold, hot and muggy conditions will continue across much of the Eastern states. Heat advisories are in effect for parts of the Northeast and coastal Mid-Atlantic.
