High pressure over the Great Basin will support dry conditions and offshore winds, contributing to a critical to extreme fire weather threat across portions of Southern California on Friday. Red Flag Warnings remain in effect for portions of the region through late Friday. Winds are expected to diminish on Saturday as high pressure over the Great Basin weakens. However gusty winds are expected to return on Sunday as another front, followed by high pressure settles into the Great Basin. From northern Texas and Oklahoma through the Tennessee valley, freeze watches and warning are in effect for Friday night to Saturday morning as some of the coldest air of the season spreads across the central U.S. Friday daytime highs are expected to remain well below-normal across much of the Plains into the Mississippi valley, before shifting further east into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys on Saturday. A consolidating area of low pressure will continue to bring widespread light to moderate wintry precipitation as it develops and lifts north into the Great Lakes on Friday. As the low continues to strengthen and track northeast from the upper Great Lakes into eastern Canada, strong northerly winds on the backside of the system will support lake effect snows, with an increasing threat for heavy accumulations, especially for portions of northern Michigan Friday into early Saturday. Low pressure developing along a stalled frontal boundary will lift north along the Mid-Atlantic coast on Friday, bringing a period of heavy rains to the Northeast as it continues to strengthen and track further to the north Friday evening. Flood and Flash Flood Watches are in effect from central New Jersey to southern Maine, were widespread rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with locally heavier amounts, can be expected.
