A storm system currently impacting the West will push out into the Plains tonight and move quickly east, reaching the East Coast by Tuesday. Precipitation is expected across the northern half of the country, particularly north of Interstate-80 in the West through Monday, and across the Great Lakes and Northeast on Monday and Tuesday. Locally heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding will be possible this evening tonight in portions of northern and central California in lower elevation portions of favored upslope areas. Meanwhile, accumulating snow is expected in higher elevation areas across the West, with over a foot of additional snow still likely in the Sierra Nevada range. Areas of strong gusty winds are also expected across parts of the West from tonight into Monday, with wind warnings and advisories in effect across portions of several states. Out ahead of the advancing storm, temperatures will be as much as 20 to 30 degrees above normal levels across much of the Plains and Midwest over the next couple days. By early Monday, precipitation will begin developing across the Great Lakes. Despite the warm temperatures, conditions are expected to be cold enough to support wintry precipitation from the eastern Dakotas into Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Accumulating ice and snow is likely across this region into Monday, as well as parts of the interior Northeast from later Monday into Tuesday. The most significant snow accumulations, in excess of 8 inches, will likely occur over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and inland Maine. The next round of heavy precipitation is likely to arrive on the West Coast later on Tuesday with a large storm system over the eastern Pacific. Additional snow is likely in the Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges although snow levels should be increasing above 6000 feet by Tuesday evening.
