Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 308 PM EST Thu Jan 10 2019 Valid 00Z Fri Jan 11 2019 - 00Z Sun Jan 13 2019 ...Cold and blustery conditions expected across the Northeast through Friday... ...Accumulating snowfall likely to expand across parts of the central Plains into the middle Mississippi Valley Friday into Saturday... Cold, cyclonic flow over the Northeast in the wake of a surface low lifting north will bring well below temperatures and blustery conditions for the rest of today and Friday into the region. Additionally, lake effect snow will continue today--ending tonight as the surface low continues moving north and east. There could be some lingering show showers in the interior of New England on Friday but expected to be light. Moisture will begin to surge across the southern Plains early Friday as a front develops along a surface low in the region. As this frontal system presses eastward, showers and thunderstorms ahead of the front will move across central Texas Friday afternoon--entering east/southeast Texas by Saturday morning. Later on Saturday, showers and thunderstorms will enter the Southeast. Along this precipitation shield, however, a wintry mix and snow will develop along the north side of the shield. On Friday, most of the snow will occur along the Colorado Rockies and in central Missouri. However, from the Colorado Front Range into the central Plains, a mix of rain and snow can be expected. From Friday night into Saturday, snow will impact areas from the central Plains into the western portions of the Ohio Valley. The heaviest snowfall concentrate along the central Mississippi Valley/western Ohio Valley area. Furthermore, some light to moderate freezing rain is also possible, with accumulations of a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice forecast across northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. By Saturday evening, the wintry precipitation will begin to move across the Ohio Valley with some light snow entering the central Appalachians. See WPC's winter weather discussion for more details on this system. The Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West will have precipitation taper off by tonight and into tomorrow--with most of the activity occurring in British Columbia. A front will approach California on Friday evening, increasing rain and higher elevation snow. Precipitation is expected to continue for southern California on Saturday.
