Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 AM EDT Fri Mar 22 2019 Valid 12Z Fri Mar 22 2019 - 12Z Sun Mar 24 2019 ...A coastal storm will continue to bring rain, interior and higher elevation snows, and gusty winds to parts Northeast through Saturday morning... ...A couple rounds of rain and mountain snows likely across the western U.S. through the weekend... ...Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread eastward across the Plains today into Saturday, and then toward the Mississippi Valley where major to historic river flooding continues... A coastal low pressure system that has brought soaking rains to the Mid-Atlantic region will continue to track northeastward up into New England today. Moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across the coastal sections. Temperatures will be cold enough to support accumulating snow well inland across much of the interior Northeast, where winter storm warnings have been issued. The storm center will begin to move into the Canadian maritimes on Saturday as the snow gradually tapers off during the day from west to east across New England. However, the size of the storm will maintain gusty northwesterly winds across much of the Northeast into Saturday night. Meanwhile, moisture from a couple of Pacific systems is forecast to bring scattered areas of mountain snow and lower-elevation rain across much of the western U.S. through Sunday morning. The first system is forecast to move eastward into the Plains on Saturday and be re-energized as it interacts with moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. Widespread showers and thunderstorms can be expected on Saturday across the central and southern Plains. By Sunday morning, the rain is expected to spread into the lower to mid Mississippi Valley where major to historic river flooding has been ongoing. Meanwhile, an arctic front is forecast to reach the U.S.-Canadian border by Sunday morning. Kong Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
