A surface low pressure system is developing just east of Florida, and is forecast to strengthen rapidly and track northward just east of the Atlantic coastline. This low will spread rain to Florida and the Carolinas today and into the Mid-Atlantic this evening, and the coastal Northeast by tonight. Though the heaviest rainfall totals are expected to remain over water, moderate to heavy rainfall is possible along the Atlantic coast. Additionally, late season light snow is possible in the Southern Appalachians and into the Piedmont of the Carolinas this morning, and snow of 1 to 3 inches is forecast for interior New England. Over water, hurricane force wind speeds are possible with this strong low. Precipitation will continue spreading across the western U.S. on Tuesday as a low moves in, with rain in lower elevations and snow in higher elevations. Additional snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible in the Sierra Nevada, Wasatch, and Wind River Mountains/Tetons. The Central Rockies could see 6 to 10 inches of snow in the highest peaks. Rain and light snow is expected to move into the Central/Northern Plains on Tuesday night, and eastward into the Middle Mississippi Valley on Wednesday. This is after some light rain and snow could fall across the Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes region on Tuesday. Though precipitation is forecast to be under an inch, any precipitation could exacerbate ongoing flooding from precipitation and snowmelt in these areas. Farther south, thunderstorms are forecast across the Southern/Central Plains and into the Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley on Wednesday and into Thursday, with severe storms possible. Temperature-wise, cooler than normal conditions are expected from the Southern Plains to the Northeast on Tuesday. A few record lows are possible across Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley, as well as in the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast. Freeze Warnings are in effect for portions of Kentucky and West Virginia, and a small part of Arkansas on Tuesday morning. Colder than average highs are likely on Wednesday across the Central Plains, supporting snow there. The West will be warm, particularly in terms of low temperatures--some record high minimum temperatures are possible on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings throughout the West.
