Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 353 AM EDT Sun May 05 2019 Valid 12Z Sun May 05 2019 - 12Z Tue May 07 2019 ...Rain and thunderstorms for the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday, with some severe thunderstorms possible... ...Thunderstorms expected for portions of the Plains for the beginning of the week, with severe weather and flash flooding possible... ...Cold temperatures and some snow forecast for the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains... A cold front is expected to move eastward across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast today, bringing wet weather and thunderstorms with it. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, particularly where the Storm Prediction Center has outlooked a Slight Risk in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Before the front passes, a warm Sunday morning is expected, and record high minimum temperatures could be set in parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Conditions will dry out over these areas by Monday after the front passes, except over Florida, where scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain as the front makes its way slowly across the peninsula. Ahead of a persistent dryline in the Central/Southern High Plains, scattered thunderstorms are expected. On Sunday, a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms is in place for much of West Texas, and localized heavy rainfall could occur across the Plains. On Monday, increasing moisture will flow from the Gulf of Mexico into southern Texas, and increase precipitation chances with it. A Slight Risk of excessive rainfall/flash flooding is in place there for Monday and Monday night. A cold front will gradually make its way southward across the Midwest and Northern/Central Plains on Sunday and Monday, eventually reaching the Ohio Valley and Lower Great Lakes region by Tuesday morning. Rain and thunderstorms are expected along the front, and heavy rainfall is possible as the front slows down in the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley region, so a Slight Risk of flash flooding will be in effect there on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked a Slight Risk of severe weather in parts of Nebraska and Iowa on Sunday, and a Slight Risk for parts of the Southern/Central Plains on Monday ahead of the front. Behind the front, colder than average high temperatures by about 10 to 20 degrees are forecast in the Northern Plains. Some light snow is possible across the Northern High Plains and higher elevations of the Northern Rockies. For the West, a low is forecast to approach California on Sunday and enter the state on Sunday night, and progress across the Central Great Basin on Monday. This low will cause colder than average temperatures in California as well as scattered showers and thunderstorms across these areas. Light snow is also possible in higher elevations, especially in the Sierra Nevada. The Pacific Northwest will remain warm and dry through the period.
