Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 346 AM EDT Wed May 22 2019 Valid 12Z Wed May 22 2019 - 12Z Fri May 24 2019 ...Stormy weather continues across the Plains with cool temperatures from California to New England... An active weather pattern continues across much of the U.S. with a western U.S. trough and a Southeast U.S. ridge, leading to episodes of strong to severe storms over the Great Plains. The current low pressure system over the Upper Midwest Wednesday morning is forecast to weaken as it lifts northward towards Canada by Thursday. The next upper-level low will encompass much of the Desert Southwest through Thursday, with widespread light to moderate precipitation expected to continue across a large section of the western U.S. with well below normal temperatures for this time of year. The Sierra Nevada and the higher elevations of the central to northern Rockies will likely have additional accumulating snow. The opposite weather pattern will be the case across the eastern half of the nation. An upper-level ridge and a strong surface high will keep anomalous heat centered over the Southeast states over the next couple of days and beyond. Widespread highs in the 90s are expected for much of the Deep South and extending eastward to the Carolinas. After a couple days of pleasant temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic region midweek, a return to more summer-like conditions is expected for the end of the week. A low pressure system from the Great Lakes will spread some rain eastward across the Mid-Atlantic and New England Wednesday night and Thursday, with most of this on the light side. However, as energy from the western U.S. upper trough ejects across the central Plains on Thursday, the chance of strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall will increase once again for these areas, with the potential for 2+ inches for some locations from Kansas to Iowa.
