A slow-moving area of low pressure interacting with deep tropical moisture will continue to support widespread moderate to heavy rains across the southeastern U.S. through the weekend. Heaviest rains on Saturday are expected to focus along the Florida Panhandle northward into the southern Appalachians and the Piedmont region. Increasing southeasterly winds drawing moisture into the higher terrain are expected to raise the potential for localized rainfall amounts of several inches across the Piedmont into the southern Appalachians. The Weather Prediction Center is indicating a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall from the northeast corner of Georgia northward into southwestern Virginia for both Saturday and Sunday. A strong cold front, ushering in well-below normal temperatures, will continue to move from the western into the central U.S. on Saturday. Strong to severe storms are expected to develop along the front as it moves into the northern and central Plains Saturday afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota into the central Plains - noting the potential for damaging wind gusts and large hail as these storm develop and strengthen later today. Heavy rainfall is a concern also, with the Weather Prediction Center indicating a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall across these areas well. Much colder air filtering in behind the front will result in temperatures dropping to near or below freezing across portions of northern California, southern Oregon and Nevada Saturday morning - where frost advisories and freeze warnings are currently in effect. Daytime temperatures 10-20 degrees below normal are expected across much of the Great Basin, northern Rockies and High Plains on Saturday. High elevation snows are forecast across the northern Rockies, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for portions of southwestern Montana into early Sunday. These below normal temperatures are expected to shift east into the central Plains on Sunday. Meanwhile temperatures will begin to rebound quickly along the West Coast, with Sunday's highs climbing well above normal across much of California and western Oregon and Washington.
