Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 205 PM EDT Tue Jun 11 2019 Valid 00Z Wed Jun 12 2019 - 00Z Fri Jun 14 2019 ...Excessive heat to continue building across the West... ...Strong to severe storms may develop across portions of the Plains this Afternoon and Tonight... ...Heavy rains and flash flooding possible across parts of the Southeast Tuesday and Wednesday... As a strong ridge of high pressure continues to build across the West, well-above normal temperatures will persist into midweek. Along the West Coast, including California, Oregon and Washington, temperatures are likely to be 10 to 30 degrees above average. Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings currently cover the Willamette Valley of Oregon, south into the Central Valley of California, most of the California Coast, and parts of the desert regions of southern California, southern Nevada and western Arizona. On Thursday, temperatures will begin to moderate as a Pacific front pushes into the Northwest. While temperatures soar in the West, a series of cold fronts will keep temperatures at or below normal levels across much of the central and eastern U.S. A cold front dropping south from central Canada into the northern Plains, along with a developing front pushing southeast across the central Plains, will be the focus for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may become strong to severe, particularly across portions of Kansas, western Oklahoma and the eastern Texas Panhandle, where the Storm Prediction Center is indicating a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms - highlighting the potential for large hail and damaging winds. Showers and storms are expected to advance farther east across the and Great Lakes Midwest by Wednesday. Across the Southeast, a stalled frontal boundary will remain in place, supporting showers and thunderstorms from the eastern Gulf Coast to the southern Mid-Atlantic through Wednesday. Some of these storms may produce heavy rainfall, raising flash flooding concerns. From Wednesday Night into Thursday, a strengthening area of low pressure will draw the front northward, along with the chance for showers and thunderstorms, into the Northeast.
