A strong upper-level trough currently situated over the northwestern U.S. translates eastward over the weekend. At the surface, low pressure will slowly track northeastward into the south central Canadian provinces. The associated frontal boundary will extend south into the Plains. The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting areas of severe weather as the cold front pushes through the Central and Southern Plains and through the Ohio Valley into the Southeast along the warm front on Saturday and Sunday. Many of the same areas are at risk for flash flooding. In eastern Oklahoma, over four inches of rainfall are possible through Monday. Parts of the already-saturated Middle Mississippi Valley could see over two inches during that time period as well. Temperatures are expected to be 15 to 30 degrees below average this weekend in the Intermountain West and Northern/Central Rockies. Freeze Warnings are in effect through Saturday morning for areas in the Intermountain West. Snow will fall in the higher elevations of the Northern/Central Rockies even though the calendar says that summer has arrived. Dangerous fire weather conditions are possible in the Southwest and in north-central California on Friday and Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center highlights fire-weather concerns Saturday in the Southwest, where dry fuel could be ignited by lightning.
