A deep upper-level trough will continue moving eastward from the Rockies into the Plains on Sunday and lift northward into the Upper Midwest on Monday. At the surface, this should push a cold front through the Plains, Mississippi Valley, and into the Ohio Valley over the next couple of days. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected for the central and eastern U.S. with these features. On Sunday, thunderstorms are forecast to focus in portions of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, where 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected, with locally higher amounts. Thus, a Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall/flash flooding is in place there on Sunday, with a Slight Risk extending into the Middle Mississippi Valley. Flood and Flash Flood Watches are in effect for these areas. An Enhanced Risk of severe weather is also delineated by the Storm Prediction Center for the Southern Plains on Sunday. As the cold front moves eastward Monday, a Slight Risk of severe weather is outlooked for portions of the Ohio Valley. Locally heavy rainfall is also possible. The aforementioned anomalous trough will bring below average temperatures to parts of the western and central U.S. High temperatures are forecast to be 15 to 30 degrees below average for the Four Corners to Central Rockies and Central Plains on Sunday. A few additional inches of snow are possible in higher elevations of the Central Rockies, ending Sunday as the trough tracks east. Record minimum temperatures could be set Monday morning in the Central and Southern High Plains. Temperatures should return closer to normal during the day on Monday, but remain below average for these areas and eastward behind the cold front. Elsewhere, conditions favorable for fire weather remain forecast for New Mexico on Sunday as low relative humidities persist. An Elevated Risk of fire weather conditions is in place there on Sunday, and on Monday, an Elevated Risk is delineated for western Nevada.
