Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 338 AM EDT Sun Jul 28 2019 Valid 12Z Sun Jul 28 2019 - 12Z Tue Jul 30 2019 ...Showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Upper Midwest today, with a localized threat for some severe weather and also some flash flooding... ...Warm and dry weather is expected across the Great Basin where there will be an elevated fire danger... ...Seasonably warm and dry weather to continue for much of the East... An expansive area of high pressure will continue to dominate the weather across much of the eastern third of the U.S. going into early next week, which will overall maintain mostly dry and pleasant weather. A couple exceptions will be to the Northeast U.S. today where a weak cold front encroaching on the region from the Great Lakes region will foster some scattered showers and thunderstorms, and also down across the Florida Peninsula where a weak stationary front will be a focus for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms going through early next week. Meanwhile, the southwest portion of the boundary advancing across the Great Lakes region today will be draped back across the central High Plains, and will be the focus for a developing area of low pressure. The low center will push east toward the Midwest by later today and strengthen as it crosses the Great Lakes region on Monday. The wave of low pressure and a trailing cold front that will cross the central Plains and Midwest will be an active focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms with the potential for some localized severe weather and also flash flooding. Elsewhere, a cold front advancing across the Northwest will settle down across areas of the Intermountain West and the northern Plains by later today, and will be responsible gradually for some notably cooler temperatures early next week for the northern Plains and Midwest. A portion of the same front will stall out over the Great Basin and central Rockies which will help keep some of the Southwest monsoonal moisture confined to the greater Four Corners region and especially over the southern Rockies. Scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms can be expected for this area. However, the remainder of the West will be very dry, and the fire danger will be elevated over areas of the Great basin today through the early part of next week.
