Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 PM EDT Mon Aug 05 2019 Valid 00Z Tue Aug 06 2019 - 00Z Thu Aug 08 2019 ...Severe thunderstorms expected from the northern Great Plains to the Upper Midwest... ...Cooler temperatures expected across the Southwest on Tuesday... ...Locally heavy rainfall possible with rain and thunderstorms in the Southeastern U.S. and the Four Corners/Rockies... Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop Monday afternoon and evening along a cold front dropping southeast across the upper Midwest. The Storm Prediction Center continues to highlight portions of northern Iowa, southern Minnesota and much of Wisconsin with an Enhanced Risk for severe thunderstorms, noting the significant potential for severe storms producing damaging winds across the region. Storms are also expected to develop farther west along the front back into the High Plains later Monday afternoon into the evening, where the Storm Prediction Center is indicating a Slight Risk for severe weather across portions of eastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota and western Nebraska. These storms may become strong to severe, producing large hail and damaging winds. This front is expected to move east, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms into the Ohio valley, Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday. The northern to central Plains will remain unsettled, with more storms developing ahead of a reinforcing cold front moving out of southern Canada into the Dakotas. For Tuesday, the Storm Prediction Center is highlighting portions of central South Dakota and Nebraska, noting the potential for large hail and damaging winds across the area. A weak upper level trough of low pressure over the eastern Pacific is expected to move inland across the Southwest, displacing a dome of high pressure and allowing for slightly cooler temperatures across the southwestern U.S. on Tuesday. Increasing clouds and a better chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms are also expected from Arizona and New Mexico through the Four Corners region into the Rockies. Abundant moisture along with summertime heating will support showers and thunderstorms from the southeastern U.S. back across the lower Mississippi valley through midweek. There is the potential for some of these storms to produce locally heavy rainfall amounts, resulting in flash-flooding concerns, especially across South Florida where ample moisture and slow-moving storms may raise flooding concerns on Monday.
