Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 435 AM EDT Fri Aug 09 2019 Valid 12Z Fri Aug 09 2019 - 12Z Sun Aug 11 2019 ...Hot and humid conditions across the South and heavy rain for parts of the central U.S. through Saturday... A rather active weather pattern is forecast to continue across parts of the Plains and the interior Northwest U.S. to close out the week as a pair of frontal boundaries pass through the northern tier of the nation. A round of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms is likely across South Dakota and into Minnesota on Friday in association with a surface low developing. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Another area of enhanced rainfall appears likely from eastern Oklahoma to northern Arkansas as deep moisture advecting northward from the Gulf intersects a stationary front. Upper-level ridging across the south-central U.S. will result in very hot and humid conditions from the southern Plains eastward to the Deep South where heat advisories are in effect, with afternoon highs in the mid 90s to low 100s, and dewpoints well into the 70s. Across the Four Corners region, monsoonal moisture on the west side of this ridge will also continue to contribute to diurnally driven showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be heavy. Across the Northwest, a break in the heat is expected as an upper-level low off the West Coast moves inland by Saturday, and brings a substantial increase in cloud cover along with a threat of moderate to locally heavy rain. This system will bring temperatures down to near normal on Friday, and below normal by Saturday. Meanwhile, hot and dry conditions will continue across parts of the central Great Basin through Friday leading to an elevated risk for fire weather, with improving conditions by this weekend.
