Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 348 PM EDT Sat Aug 31 2019 Valid 00Z Sun Sep 01 2019 - 00Z Tue Sep 03 2019 ...Dorian to move across the northwestern Bahamas as a major hurricane on Sunday... ...Excessive heat continues into Sunday across portions of the Southwest... ...Record-breaking heat across portions of the central Rockies and High Plains... ...Elevation fire weather conditions expected across portions of the northern Rockies on Monday... Dorian is forecast to remain a powerful hurricane as it tracks farther westward through the weekend and closer to the Florida coast. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows Dorian moving across the northwestern Bahamas as a major hurricane late Sunday into Monday. Dorian is forecast to slow and turn northward near or just offshore of the central Florida peninsula on Monday. Life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane forecast winds are still possible along portions of the Florida east coast by the early to middle part of next week. Refer to the National Hurricane Center for the latest information regarding Dorian. Above-normal to well-above-normal temperatures are forecast to continue across much of the western U.S. into early next week. Excessive heat warnings have been extended through Sunday across portions of the southern California deserts, southern Nevada, including the Las Vegas metro, and western Arizona - where daytime temperatures are expected to climb into the triple digits once again. Near-record to record-breaking temperatures are expected Monday across portions of the central Rockies into the High Plains, including the Denver metro area. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach as high as the upper 90s across parts of the region. A cold front dropping southeast from the Pacific Northwest will support breezy conditions but little precipitation - generating elevated fire weather conditions from southwestern Montana and southern Idaho to northern Utah and southern Wyoming on Monday. Following another day of scattered showers and thunderstorms, expect mostly dry conditions over the central and southern Plains on Sunday as the better chances for precipitation shift farther northeast through the Ohio valley into the Northeast. Rain chances are expected to continue across the Northeast into Monday ahead of cold front approaching from southeastern Canada. Meanwhile, as the system over the West begins to move east of the northern Rockies, showers and thunderstorms will become more likely across the northern Plains and upper Midwest on Monday.
