Hurricane Dorian is forecast to move northeastward today as it begins to accelerate away from the Carolinas. The storm will continue to bring a range of impacts to portions of eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia today, including storm surge, high winds, and flash flooding. Impacts across these areas should begin to wind down Friday evening as the hurricane moves away from the region. Dorian is forecast to move close enough to Cape Cod and the Massachusetts Islands to bring a period of heavy rain and tropical storm force winds late Friday into Saturday. Farther west, an upper-level disturbance expected to move from the northern Great Basin across the northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains today and Saturday is expected to focus areas of showers and thunderstorms. Areas of heavy rainfall are possible across the Northern Plains by Friday night into Saturday. Meanwhile, an upper-level ridge of high pressure across the south central U.S. will result in well above average temperatures today through the weekend from portions of the Southern Plains east across the Gulf Coast states.
