Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 329 AM EDT Mon Sep 23 2019 Valid 12Z Mon Sep 23 2019 - 12Z Wed Sep 25 2019 ...Summer holds on across the East and unsettled weather for the Southwest states... Today marks the beginning of fall. However, temperatures will continue to feel more like summer across the eastern and southern U.S. on Monday with high temperatures in the upper 80s to middle 90s. Relief is expected to arrive by Tuesday and Wednesday for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region as a cold front crosses the region and heralds a return to more seasonal temperatures. The same can not be said for the Deep South and Gulf Coast region, where highs will likely continue to run above normal through the middle of the week. The remnants of former Tropical Storm Lorena will result in an increase in clouds and rain across the southwestern U.S. to start the week. There should be enough moisture in place to support a significant rainfall event with widespread 1 to 2 inch rainfall totals, with the greatest amounts in central and southern Arizona. This may be enough to warrant flash flooding concerns, and therefore a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall from WPC is in effect for that region. Some strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible. Elsewhere across the continental U.S., heavy rain will be possible across parts of northern Texas and Oklahoma as a stationary frontal boundary is expected to reside across this area and intercept Gulf of Mexico moisture. Scattered showers and storms are also likely across the Midwest states and Great Lakes region ahead of another cold front that will usher in cooler temperatures for the north-central U.S. by the middle of the week.
